What if we over capitalised on our own joy? Flipping ROI into ROJ
As we say good bye to winter and inch closer to spring—I find myself reflecting on the concept of investment. No, not the financial kind, but something much more personal: the investment in our own joy.
We often hear about ROI (Return on Investment) in finance, real estate or business. But what if we shifted our focus from dollars and cents to something more profound—our own joy and satisfaction? This week, let’s explore why investing in our happiness, or what I like to call ROJ (Return on Joy), can far outweigh the benefits of traditional ROI.
The Spring of Life
As a spring baby, I’ve always had a soft spot for this season of renewal and growth. I remember as a child, when asked about my birthday, I’d simply say it was in spring—no specific date needed. To me, spring was a time of joy and new beginnings, and it still is. This season’s arrival always prompts me to reflect on how we can embrace renewal not just in our surroundings, but in our lives.
This got me thinking about a recent conversation I had with a dear friend who’s about to renovate her kitchen. She was concerned about over-capitalising on her home.
While it’s important to consider the financial aspects, what if we looked at it differently? Instead of focusing solely on the financial return, what if we prioritised the Return on Joy (ROJ)? What if we aimed for over-capitalising on our own joy?
The Power of ROJ
Imagine this: You’ve been dreaming of a beautiful bathtub in your bathroom. It’s not just a luxury; it’s a sanctuary where you envision unwinding after a long week with a glass of wine in hand, bubbles surrounding you and your favourite show entertaining you. Sure, it might cost more, but if it brings you immense joy and enhances your daily life, isn’t that worth the investment?
When we focus solely on financial ROI, we often overlook the emotional and personal benefits. In my own home renovation journey, I found that creating a space that brought me joy led to unexpected rewards. The more I invested in my own happiness, the more abundance and joy flowed into other areas of my life.
Unquantifiable moments of joy
Consider the things that bring the most joy to our lives—like the depth of love we feel for someone or the spontaneous, awe-inspiring moments in nature that take our breath away.
These are experiences that defy measurement. You can't put a number on the love you give or receive; it's boundless and infinite. Similarly, those moments when a sunrise stops you in your tracks or a butterfly lands unexpectedly on your hand—these are pure, unquantifiable moments of joy. They don’t come with a Return on Investment (ROI) that can be calculated. Instead, they offer a different kind of return—a Return on Joy (ROJ). And if something brings you that kind of joy, isn't that always a "yes" in the book of life? My sense of joy may look very different from yours, but the principle remains the same: if it enriches your spirit, it’s worth every bit of investment.Unquantifiable moments of joy
Beyond the Price Tag
So how do we apply the ROJ principle in our lives? Here’s a simple framework:
Identify What Sparks Joy: Whether it’s a home renovation, a new wardrobe piece, or a personal experience, focus on what genuinely brings you joy.
Prioritise Joy Over Cost: If something enhances your life and makes you feel incredible, consider it an investment in yourself. The joy it brings can’t be measured.
Celebrate the Immeasurable: Love, aha moments, and the beauty of nature are all priceless. Embrace these experiences as part of your ROJ (Return on Joy).
Joy as a High Vibration Frequency
Quantum physics tells us that everything is made up of energy, vibrating at different frequencies. Joy, gratitude, and love are high-vibration energies that attract more positive experiences into our lives. By investing in what brings us joy, we elevate our vibrational frequency and invite even more happiness and abundance.
Practical ROJ Tips
Home Investments: Think about how changes in your living space can enhance your daily life. A kitchen that excites you or a cozy nook for relaxation can offer immense ROJ.
Wardrobe Choices: When buying new clothes, ask yourself if they align with your vision of your best self. If they boost your confidence and joy, they’re worth it.
Personal Growth: Invest in experiences that enrich your life, whether it’s a course ('amplify your purpose' for example), a book, or a social event. The value of these investments often extends far beyond financial metrics.
My final thoughts
As we navigate through the last few months of the year, let’s remember that the ROJ (Return on Joy) can offer a richer, more fulfilling experience than traditional ROI. By prioritising our happiness and embracing what truly brings us joy, we create a life that’s not just financially sound but emotionally and personally rewarding.
Here’s to investing in ourselves and celebrating the immeasurable joy that comes from doing so. Until next time, keep seeking what makes you happy and remember that the best investments are those that enrich your life from the inside out.
With love and gratitude,
